Community Rules

The rules for everything other sailors can see, and what to do if something is wrong.

Effective date: 21 October 2026

The Helm is for keeping your word to yourself, and sailing in company with people who help you keep it. These rules apply to everything other sailors can see: your sailor and ship names, convoy and Family Convoy names, Duty names you share, Family orders and treasures, and signals. They form part of the Terms of Use.

Zero tolerance

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. Content that breaks these rules is removed, and an account that posts it can be suspended from convoys, signals and challenges, or closed, without warning.

Don’t

  • Harass or bully. No threats, intimidation, insults, repeated unwanted signals, or piling on.
  • Use hate or slurs. Nothing that attacks or demeans people for their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, caste, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age or any similar characteristic.
  • Post sexual content. No sexual, sexually suggestive or explicit words, and nothing sexual involving anyone under 18, ever (reported to the authorities).
  • Encourage harm. No encouragement of suicide, self-harm, eating disorders or violence. If you are worried about someone, contact local emergency services or a crisis line.
  • Spam or scam. No advertising, chain messages, links to scams, or attempts to get money or personal details.
  • Pretend. Don’t impersonate another person, The Helm, or a Guardian.
  • Share private information about anyone else (addresses, phone numbers, photos) without their permission.
  • Cheat others. Don’t manipulate convoy standings, Convoy Objectives, Regattas or match races.

Junior sailors

Junior sailors are teens aged 13 to 17 in Family Convoys, run by their Guardians. Be especially careful: nothing above is ever acceptable towards a Junior sailor. Guardians are responsible for the Junior sailors they invite. Junior sailors should read these rules with a Guardian.

If something is wrong

  • Report it. Press and hold a signal or tap its ⋯; tap ⋯ beside a convoy member to report them, their name or their ship; use the Convoy articles to report a convoy’s name. Reports go to The Helm’s moderator, never to the person reported.
  • We review every report within 24 hours and remove content or suspend accounts that break these rules.
  • Block anyone you’d rather not hear from (⋯ beside their name). They can’t signal or challenge you, you won’t see their signals, and they aren’t told. Unblock them any time under Ship’s Office → Account → Blocked sailors.
  • Leave a convoy at any time; your ship, passage and Log stay yours.
  • For anything urgent or unsafe, email support@ayeaye.com.au. If someone is in danger, contact emergency services first.

What we do

Automatic checks refuse slurs and explicit words in names and signals. People review reports. Actions are: removing the content (a signal then reads “This signal was removed”; a name is reset to “Sailor”, “Ship” or “Convoy”), suspending an account from convoys, signals and challenges (it can still be used privately), or closing it. We keep a record of reports and decisions to deal with repeat abuse; see the Privacy Policy.
